Video Games and Gamers
Gamers are generally divided into several types based on their behavior, such as socializers, beaters, and completers. The latter group tends to be highly dedicated to collecting game badges and rewards. Socializers, on the other hand, prefer to play games with friends. Whether socializing or playing alone, gamer groups differ considerably. For example, some people identify as ‘completers’ only if they complete all aspects of the game.
The perception of gamers has changed. In the past, game publishers targeted young males for marketing purposes, but today’s games companies are targeting a strategic sub-demographic of gamers. While young males make up a significant portion of the gamer population, they are generally unhappy in the modern world. The proliferation of toxic online activities has impacted the image of gamer identities. And, it’s not just younger males who are avoiding the real world.
Among gamers in the U.S., the majority are Time Fillers. Another quarter are Bargain Buyers, who spend primarily on AAA titles. Another 12% are Ultimate Gamers. The latter group is characterized by a tendency to spend time and money on games that fit into their existing social networks. And, for gamers who enjoy playing games that can be played for free, they’re likely to spend money on them. For example, many people play Fortnite and Candy Crush to pass the time.
Video games offer a unique way to relax and exert control. They provide an opportunity for gamers to exercise their social skills. Some people use video games to relax and wind down after a long day at work. People are able to make multiple choices within the game and feel in control of the outcome. In Kurt’s words, they have multiple choices. But in reality, there’s no reason for gamers to feel isolated when playing video games. If they’re truly socially isolated, they could become victims of crime.
Video games can also improve people’s multitasking skills. Since most games require players to perform multiple tasks at once, gamers can develop better multitasking skills. For example, action games require players to keep an eye on an enemy on the screen, while balancing the movement of their character and speaking on a microphone. All of these skills make gaming fun and rewarding for gamers. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a controller and get playing!
Parents’ involvement in gamers’ lives is also an important factor. Children who live with their parents often experience negative gaming experiences when they don’t have adequate parental support. The parents, however, play a significant role in fostering gaming engagement and helping kids manage their emotions in healthy ways. Their encouragement and support may even be instrumental in developing good gaming habits. If these two factors are addressed, they can help problem gamers become more aware of the positive effects of gaming on their lives.
Gaming has even proven beneficial for the brain. A recent study at the University of California, Irvine concluded that video game players improve problem-solving and logic skills. A study conducted on 27 professionals found that a high-level gamer’s brain connectivity was enhanced compared to a non-gamer’s. The heightened connectivity of the brain translates to increased cognitive abilities. The brain’s hippocampus, for instance, is responsible for spatial awareness, and playing video games regularly can improve cognitive abilities.
