The Positive and Negative Effects of Online Games
Online games are interactive video games that have a digital world and allow players to connect with other gamers. They typically require an internet connection to play and are played using keyboard keys or a controller to control the action. Online games are a popular form of entertainment and can be used to relieve stress or entertain family and friends. However, they can also be a way to learn and develop skills such as concentration, attention span, teamwork, strategic thinking, and problem-solving.
The popularity of online games has grown rapidly in recent years. They have become a common pastime for people of all ages and offer a range of different experiences from socialising with other players to immersive virtual reality. They are also a great way to keep fit as many have exercise-based modes that can help players burn calories.
One of the main positive effects of online gaming is meeting the needs for personal growth, satisfying the need for social life and promoting academic performance. However, some negative effects are also associated with online gaming, such as addiction, depression and the development of psychological problems. The study aims to explore the relationship between these factors and the use of online games.
According to the results of this research, three themes were identified: Meeting the needs for personal growth, Satisfying the need for social life and Promoting Academic Performance. In the first theme, college students often experience stress and anxiety from academics, family and other social issues, which can be relieved through online games. Besides, the game provides an outlet for their anger and frustration. Moreover, the game can be used to challenge their abilities and help them develop resilience.
In the second theme, the online game serves as a way for college students to escape from their stressful lives and relax. They can also use the game to meet other gamers and share their interests with them. In addition, the game can also provide a sense of achievement and pride. For example, when they win a game, they feel excited and proud. However, when they lose a game, they may feel depressed and anxious.
The third theme is that online games have been used as a tool for self-expression, as they can provide an opportunity for people to express themselves and share their personalities. For instance, some gamers have created fictional characters that represent their real-life personality and values. They also use the game to test their ability to solve problems and achieve goals. For example, the game Path of Exile allows gamers to create their own character and fight their way through the ruined continent of Wraeclast. The gamers can earn in-game currency, which they can then sell for real money on the internet. This has created a secondary market in the gaming world that is worth billions of dollars. Similarly, gamers can spend hours earning in-game weapons and power to impress other gamers and compete with them.
