While he agrees with Caillois that games have to be playful, he distinguishes them from other forms of recreation in that they require a mental shift in perspective and are governed by rules that create unequal outcomes for players.
Unlike real-world competitions, games are structured, meaning they have clear rules and goals for their players to follow. While the player is free to disagree with or break the rules, they are ultimately a part of the magic circle that dictates the integrity of the game. Moreover, if the player breaks these rules, they risk leaving the circle and no longer playing the game.
Although most games are played alone, they can also be a platform for group play where players are encouraged to interact with one another in a pressure-free environment. This socialization can help reduce feelings of isolation and depression and improve overall mental health. However, it is important for gamers to balance their gaming time with other forms of socialization such as spending time with friends in person and volunteering. This will ensure that gaming does not become an addictive behavior and is not taken too seriously. Furthermore, it will ensure that gamers continue to find joy in the activity. This is an especially important step in a society that is becoming increasingly more technologically reliant on devices like smartphones and tablets.
