The Benefits of Games
A game is a structured form of play, usually undertaken for enjoyment and sometimes used as an educational tool. Games can be competitive or non-competitive, and they can involve skill, strategy, luck, or a combination of the three. They may be played by individuals or groups; alone, with a team, or against another person or group; online or offline; and as entertainment for spectators (such as fans of spectator sports).
Some games, such as chess or Go, are deterministic and require strategic thinking to win. Other games, such as board games or jigsaw puzzles, have a high degree of randomness and are not considered to be true games by some definitions.
Many video games feature rich story lines that allow players to immerse themselves in fictional worlds and take on challenging missions. These games have been shown to improve players’ ability to think on their feet and solve problems quickly, skills that can translate into real-world career goals. For example, a study from the Helsinki University found that children who played strategy-based games like role-playing games and shooter games showed an improvement in their problem-solving abilities the following school year.
Aside from the obvious benefits of increasing cognitive ability, games also have the potential to help reduce social isolation and depression. For example, a multiplayer online game like the popular World of Warcraft has been shown to increase social interaction among its players and has even helped some players overcome their depression. In addition, a video game called The Forest, which was released in 2016, helps users cope with post-traumatic stress disorder by allowing them to interact with virtual trees and creatures.
The most common types of games include video games, board games, and card games. Video games typically require a special hardware platform such as a personal computer, console, or mobile phone to run. Some games are available for download from the Internet, while others are purchased or rented. Some games are based on classic board games or other genres and can be played using traditional or digital versions of the original.
People play games for a variety of reasons. Some people enjoy the challenge and excitement of winning. Others enjoy the story of the game, or the way the game makes them feel. Still others play to escape from the world they live in, whether it’s an abusive home life or a monotonous job. A few studies have shown that some people may play games to relieve anxiety or depression, but the results of these trials are not conclusive. It’s important to consult a healthcare professional before playing any type of game for mental health purposes.
