Online gaming can provide an engaging and entertaining experience that distracts players from their daily responsibilities and provides a break from the demands of life. It can also serve as an emotional outlet, allowing players to release stress or frustration in a controlled environment. For children, online gaming can encourage teamwork and foster a sense of belonging within a virtual community.
Some games require a high level of skill, promoting the development of specific knowledge and skills. In addition, some games allow players to experiment with different aspects of their personality in a safe and controlled environment, facilitating self-discovery. This is especially true for role-playing games, which can enable players to explore their interests and strengths in a fun and engaging way.

However, it is important to note that these positive features are primarily based on foreign studies of online game use and have yet to be confirmed in the Chinese context. Therefore, it is vital for college educators and families to understand the positive effects of online games and guide their students’ usage reasonably. The current research aims to examine the positive effects of online games on Chinese college students by conducting semi-structured interviews and using qualitative analysis. The results suggest that the most significant positive features of online games are meeting the need for personal growth, satisfying the requirement for social life, and promoting academic performance. In the future, these findings can be used to develop effective strategies that can promote online game users’ psychological demands and help them learn in a more interesting and effective manner.
